VISION Cloud: What’s in it for Siemens
Siemens Corporate Research and Technologies plans to exploit the results of VISION Cloud for cloud-based storage solutions in the healthcare, energy, and industry domain as well as trying to leverage cloud technology and services for corporate IT services where beneficial.
Our vision of cloud computing is that a future IT system will work like an always and everywhere available public transportation system works today. You pay only for the capacity (seats) you use and your consumed resources (food or first class). And as with transportation, in cloud computing the customer does not have to care about the operation and maintenance.
VISION Cloud aims at highly simplified and efficient storage interfaces that allow domain specific adoptions. The capability to migrate and federate even large datasets fast, secure and with a defined Quality of Service between providers will be a major step to broad acceptance and will provide decision makers with a stable and resilient
base for their cloud computing investments.
One big challenge for us as the researchers behind the VISION Cloud
is the intention to provide a unified general purpose interface to application developers. On the other hand VISION Cloud must maintain the performance, availability and reliability of an equivalent implementation tailored for a specific domain.
The acceptance of customers and companies using cloud computing will depend heavily on a reasonable integration capability for legacy hard- and software into the final outcome of the VISION Cloud project. Not to forget the legality and security issues those arise if you span a cloud over several enterprises, countries, or continents.

Dr. Michael C. Jaeger
’s research interests are in the fields of distributed systems and cloud computing. Michael has received a German university diploma in computer engineering and a German doctorate degree in engineering sciences (Dr.-Ing.), both from Berlin University of Technology.
works for Siemens AG's central research unit Corporate Technology in the area of system and software architectures with a primary focus on cloud computing technologies. Sebastian holds a university diploma in computer engineering from the University of Würzburg.
Dr. Gerald Kaefer
works for Siemens Corporate Research and Technologies as program manager for cloud computing. His research interest is focused on industrial use of cloud platforms and related cloud architectures. Gerald holds a university diploma in electrical engineering and a doctoral degree in computer engineering form Graz University of Technology, both with highest honors.
Dr. Albert Eckert
works for Siemens Corporate Research and Technologies in the field of knowledge and decision systems. His research interests are focused on data modeling, process mining and search technologies. Albert has received a physics diploma at Technical University in Munich and a German engineering doctorate degree (Dr.-Ing.) from Universitaet der Bundeswehr in Munich.
works for Siemens Corporate Research and Technologies as a program manager for information integration and visual analytics. His research interests are data modeling and integration, visual decision support and personalized and context oriented information provision in the healthcare and public transportation domain. Holger has received a German university diploma in computer engineering from Berlin University of Technology.
